Recipe Scaling Calculator

Adjust ingredient quantities for more or fewer servings. Enter one ingredient per line, and the calculator will scale the first numeric quantity on each line.

Scale your recipe

Choose the original and target serving counts, then enter your ingredients below.

Example: “2 cups rice” or “400 g beans.” Use a number at the beginning of each line for automatic scaling.

How to scale a recipe accurately

Recipe scaling helps you adapt a meal for a smaller household or a larger gathering. Calculate the ratio between the number of servings you want and the recipe’s original yield, then apply that ratio to each ingredient quantity.

Formula: scaled quantity = original quantity × (target servings ÷ original servings). If a recipe serves 4 and you want 2 servings, the scale factor is 0.5. A recipe using 2 cups of rice would therefore use 1 cup.

Use this result as a starting point. Small amounts of spices, raising agents, salt, and strong flavorings may need careful adjustment. For baking, changing batch size can affect pan depth, baking time, and texture.

Limitations and food safety

This calculator scales the first numeric quantity at the beginning of each ingredient line. It does not recognize every fraction format, convert between measurement systems, calculate nutrition, or automatically adjust preparation methods. Check the scaled recipe before using it, and follow appropriate food handling and cooking guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scale a recipe up or down?

Divide the target serving count by the original serving count. Multiply each ingredient quantity by the resulting scale factor.

Can this calculator convert cups to grams?

No. It scales the quantity but keeps the unit as entered. Converting volume to weight depends on the ingredient and its density.

Does scaling a recipe change cooking time?

It can. Cooking time may depend on pan size, depth, oven load, and the food itself, so check doneness and follow the original recipe’s safety guidance.

Can I use this for baking?

You can use it to scale ingredient quantities, but baking chemistry can be sensitive to rounding and batch size. Review the method, equipment, and ingredient proportions carefully.
